Each month, we spotlight a different wine that’s available to taste from our Enomatic machines, in our London Shop at 63 Pall Mall. For April, Assistant Manager George Turner has selected our perennially popular Own Selection Barolo.

2016 Berry Bros. & Rudd Barolo by Giovanni Rosso, Piedmont

What is it?

Ahead of the upcoming 2018 release, our focus this month is Barolo. And so, I’d like to spotlight our own-label 2016 Barolo, produced by Giovanni Rosso.

Our Barolo is blend of three communes, each bringing their singular identity to this terroir-driven wine. The Castiglione Falletto element provides aromas of luscious morello cherries, rose, violets and a touch of Italian dried herbs. The power and depth of this wine is drawn from the ancient white soils of Serralunga d’Alba, bringing minerality to the palate.

This is an eloquent Barolo that can be enjoyed now or will be drinking up until 2037.

What’s the story behind it?

Giovanni Rosso is a small, family-owned producer based in the heart of the Barolo commune of Serralunga d’Alba that only produces red wine

While the family have been growing grapes since the 1890s, it wasn’t until Giovanni came along and re-built and restructured the vineyards and wine production in the 1980s they started to produce and bottle under their own label.

In 2001, Davide, Giovanni’s son, took over the estate following his viticultural and oenological studies in France. It’s from here that his single mindedness about terroir was born. Today, this is a producer driven by the idea that wines “should be a perfect copy of their terroir.”

What should I drink it with?

Good friends or family around the dinner table enjoying each other’s company. I’d also recommend a roast boneless leg of lamb, stuffed with herbs and garlic. As this Barolo has a delicacy to it, a grilled vegetable pizza would be delicious too.
